"Clinton Kennedy Cundiff, 85, Somerset businessman, developer, and agriculturist passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at his home in Somerset, Kentucky after a brief illness.
Mr. Cundiff, born January 11, 1918 in Faubush, KY, was the son of the late Stinson and Henrietta Weddle Cundiff. He was a life long resident of Somerset and a member of the First Baptist Church. Known as C.K. to his family and friends, he graduated from Somerset High School in 1938 and Berea College in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. After graduation, Mr. Cundiff had a distinguished career in Agriculture including an offer by President Harry S. Truman to be United States Secretary of Agriculture. In 1949, he founded Cundiff Seed Company. From 1950 through the 1970’s Cundiff Seed became the world’s largest grower and shipper of Kentucky 31 Fescue seed. Through Mr. Cundiff’s direct efforts, KY 31 became one of the foremost strains of grass seed in the country and is the predecessor to the modern lawn grass seeds so popular today. Mr. Cundiff patented and copyrighted Kentucky 41 Fescue Seed and was affectionately known by many of his farmer partner and friends and “Fescue”.
As a businessman and developer, Mr. Cundiff was the President/CEO Wholesale Plumbers and Electric Supply Inc., and, along with numerous properties, he developed two major business centers in Somerset; Gateway Centre and Cundiff Square Center LTD. Known to many as Town Springs Square, Cundiff Square is a 15 acre downtown business center and apartment complex containing the Historical Town Springs where the city of Somerset began in 1801 and is on the Kentucky Historical Register and the Kentucky Heritage Commission. Mr. Cundiff was widely known for his knowledge of Somerset and Pulaski County. He spent over 50 years dedicated to preserving some of the history of Somerset and the historical spring.
Mr. Cundiff is survived by his wife Phyllis Lawrence Cundiff: two sons, Richard K. Cundiff of Somerset, Donald L. Cundiff of Lexington, KY, and a stepdaughter Tamara L. Harper Avera of Somerset; two grandsons, Clarence K. Cundiff of Lexington, KY, Shandon B. Cundiff of Lexington, KY and a step grandson Tylen Avera; a great grandson Sheldon Douglas Cundiff; a sister, Mildred Tarter of Dayton, OH and a brother, Winfred Cundiff of Nancy, KY; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 60 years Irene Johnson Cundiff, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
The funeral services will be at 1pm Saturday, May 10, 2003 at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Somerset. Friends may call after 5pm Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland, P.O. Box 651, Somerset, KY 42502"

Clinton Kennedy Cundiff, 85, Somerset businessman, developer, and agriculturist passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at his home in Somerset, Kentucky after a brief illness.
