Russell Co., KY Marriages, 1826-1865 - Bailey-Butler
Compilation copyright 1985 Gary L. Flanagan

I originally compiled this data during 1984-1985 from the original
documents in the Russell Co., KY Courthouse. The contents were
transcribed onto index cards, which were transcribed into typewritten
form in 1985. The Web version consists of files scanned from the typed
document. While I am proofreading this material and comparing it to the
typed version as I make it available on the Web, it is subject to error
at the time of transcription, typing, and scanning. I apologize for any
errors in transcription and will correct any if proper documentation is
provided (i.e., photocopies of the records); I will also be glad to
consider adding pertinent notes.

The format is as follows:

Groom's name, bride's name. Date. Person performing the marriage. Date
of bond, surety. Witnesses. Other information (parentage, notes, etc.)
Book-page.

For example:
Brown, Berryman (Benjamin) G. to Sarah E. Downey. December 20, 1855.
Married by Wm. W. Bernard, M.G., at John Downey, Sr.'s. Bond: Dec. 19,
1855, James S. Bernard and Sherrod W. Downey as sureties. Witnesses:
Sherrod Downey, Dick Wilson, John Downey, Sr. 2-95,96.

The groom in this example is Berryman G. Brown. The bride is Sarah E.
Downey. The marriage was on Dec. 20, 1855. The marriage was performed by
Wm. W. Bernard at John Downey's. The bond was date Dec. 19, 1855 with
James S. Bernard and Sherrod W. Downey as the sureties. The witnesses
were Sherrod Downey, Dick Wilson, and John Downey, Sr. The documents are
in Book 2, pages 95-96 in the Russell County Courthouse.

I hope that this information is useful to others undertaking
genealogical research.

Subject: CUNDIFF/ECHOLS VA>MO

Hi. Am looking for information on Rhoda Cundiff (b 1795 VA). She
married James H. Echols (b 1794 VA, d Dec 25, 1850 MO) on Feb 1, 1817
in Bedford County, Virginia. According to their marriage record, Rhoda was
the daughter of Isaac Cundiff. In "Our Kin" Jonathan Cundiff married
___Squires. They had a son, Isaac Cundiff, who was a soldier in the
Revolutionary War and who married Mary Echols in Bedford County-
marriage bond dated Oct. 18, 1774. Their children were listed as:
Christopher, Chesley, Jubal., and Parmelia. Is Rhoda either Jubal or
Parmelia or neither? Rhoda and James Echols had three daughters-
Angelica Mary (Marry?) Jane Echols b 1819 VA, Semiramis (?) T. Echols
b 1825 VA and Parmelia Elizabeth b 1834 VA. I think this is the right
track given the marriages between CUNDIFFS and ECHOLS and the
reappearance of Parmelia. Any help much appreciated.

Subject: Abner GARRETT- Help

Hi. My gggrandfather was Abner GARRETT. b 1815 VA, d 1855 Boone
County, MO. He married Angelica Mary (Marry?) Jane ECHOLS on Nov. 15,
1837 in Bedford County, Virginia. Angelica was the daughter of Rhoda
CUNDIFF Echols and James H. Echols. I can not find who was Abner
Garrett's family. Any help much appreciated. This is what I know,
(or believe I know). Abner and Angelica's children were: James C. (b
1838 VA), Rhoda Elizabeth (b 1852 MO)- married John H. CAMPBELL,
Abner Greenwood (b 1844 MO, d 1878 MO)- married Phobe E. SWINNEY,
Stephen Jackson (b 1847 MO, d 1905 MO)- married Melvina A. VAUGHN,
and Virginia b 1851 MO. Stephen Jackson's oldest son (my
grandfather) was Silas Abner Garrett. There is a Silas Garrett in
1810 Census of VA (Franklin County). In the 1800 Tax names for
Bedford county are listed- James Eckhols, Jacob Eckhols, Silas
Garrett and John Garrett. Are any of these Garretts relatives of
Abner's? Lots of Garretts in Missouri- Boone and Callaway counties
at the same time but I can't prove a link. Any help or suggestions
greatly appreciated.

For Sarah Young, daughter of William Young
and Patience Sinclair, I have her birth date
as Apr. 1, 1747.

What do you show for the date and place of
her marriage to John Cundiff? Do you have
the date and place of her death?

Some sources I have seen indicate that she
died as an infant. She is not mentioned in
her father's will though siblings Bryan,
William, Hannah, Mary, and Susannah are.

Hi! Here's something interesting:
I went to the National Archives on Friday to see if I could find Stephen Cundiff and Eliza in the 1860 census. The pair did not marry until November 1850, and in that census Eliza is listed with her father. But I also looked for and found who may very likely be Stephen in 1850. He's the first Mexican War volunteer I've ever run across. Laurie

Stephen Cundiff's second wife was Nancy Myers. Stephen and Nancy children: Effie, George,
Thomas, Walter, Hattie Christine. Thomas was my grandfather born in 1879 and died November 9, 1955. (He was hit by a car.) I have spent many hours with Grandpa and Uncle Walter. Hattie Christine married a man named Sizemore and moved to Texas. Like you I do find that sometimes the dates are a little off and that sometimes the order of wives and children are wrong, but I can be sure of one thing that Nancy was my great-grandmother and that she was Stephen's second wife. Stephen is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Newport, KY. For his birthdate I have Feb. 4, 1828 (Clay County, KY) and for his death Dec 1, 1910. I know that he volunteered for the Mexican Campaign and also for the Civil war as a wagoneer (Northern Army).

I hope this information is acceptable and is of some help. I wouldn't be where I am today without the help of previous researchers. ( I have only been doing this for 3 months and I am very pleased with the results. I thank all who have been helped it is much appreciated. Dear Dr. Cundiff,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply to my "unusual" letter.
Thanks to you, I am now on the road of tracing the family background.
Your future book holds much interest to me and I would like to
volunteer my service/s, in whatever position I would best fall into, in seeing
you complete this book before too much time comes to pass. I can do letter
writing and library research which will allow you to use your time on more
important matters.
Looking forward to hearing from you from time to time, I am,
Respectfully yours,
